When making our Fernando Berlin boots and gloves, we only use the highest quality materials. Leather is our preferred material because it has the best properties for a boot. It is extremely easy to shape, is stable and breathable. Which leather is used depends primarily on the model. For boot models that should fit tightly and supplely on the leg, we use finely cut, soft-tanned cow or lamb leather, which is ideal because of its fine grain and smooth surface ("soft leather"). Stable and firmly processed cow leather is perfect for models whose shaft should remain dimensionally stable ("solid leather"). Here Ferdinand shows you the difference: https://youtu.be/YDJXFBkub2c
The finish of the leather determines whether it is glossy or matte. We prefer a glossy finish. As an alternative to leather, we also offer almost all models in vinyl. The base is a sturdy textile fabric that is covered with vinyl.
The inner lining is made of soft pigskin or calfskin. Unlined boots have a goatskin lining at the end of the shaft.
We source all of our leather exclusively from European production, usually from Portugal, Spain or Italy.
For some models, our designer Ferdinand recommends suede, which many people know as "suede". This is genuine leather. Suede is split leather. While smooth leather consists of the top layer of a skin, suede consists of the underlying layer of skin. It is characterized by its velvety feel.
If you want to avoid leather altogether, you can also order all Fernandos in imitation leather.
Please remember that leather is a natural product. Irregularities and color variations are part of the patina of this wonderful material. Close your eyes when you stroke the shaft of your Fernandos and you will feel it!
